Charleston Light Opera Guild, the Official Musical Theatre of WV, announces auditions for the international awarded musical phenomenon, "Les Misérables". The production is in collaboration with the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences WV and will be presented at the Maier Performance Hall on January 15-17, and 21-23, 2027. The Guild and Clay Center previously presented the musical in 2013.
Les Misérables is a sung-through musical based on the 1862 novel by Victor Hugo. It has music by Claude-Michel Schonberg, lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel and a book by Boublil and Schonberg is one of the most popular musicals of all times. Set in early 19th century France, it tells the story of Jean Valjean, a French convict and his journey of redemption. After stealing a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child, Valjean is imprisoned for 19 years and released in 1815. When a bishop inspires him with a tremendous act of mercy, Valjean breaks his parole, changes his name and starts his life anew. He becomes wealthy and adopts an orphan, Cosette. A police inspector name Javert pursues Valjean over the decades in a single-minded quest for justice. The plot leads the characters to Paris, where they are swept up in the events of a revolutionary period in France, as a group of young idealists attempt to overthrow the government from a street barricade. The musical is an epic tale of passion & redemption.

Prepare a musical selection and bring sheet music for Guild accompanist unless singing from the score.
Rehearsals begin November 9, 2026. Holidays will be honored.

Jean Valjean – lead male, dramatic tenor, plays ages 40s-60s; ex-convict who becomes a factory owner & mayor; he adopts a daughter, Cosette, and helps those in need with his quest for redemption.
Javert – lead male, baritone or bass/baritone; plays age 40s-60s; police inspector who believes in the law & will stop at nothing to enforce justice; incapable of compassion; becomes almost an animal on the chase.
Fantine – lead female, lyric soprano; age 21-40; a working class girl that becomes pregnant and abandoned; she descends into a life of prostitution in order to care for her daughter.
Cosette – lead female, soprano, plays age 18-25; daughter of Fantine and adopted by Valjean; she grows up to be a lovely young woman of culture & privilege that falls in love with Marius.
Eponine – lead female, mezzo-soprano belt; plays age 16-30; daughter of the Thenardiers; becomes ragged & a waif; she secretly loves Marius.
Marius – lead male, tenor or high baritone; plays age 20-30; student revolutionary and friend of Eponine who falls in love with Cosette.
Madame Thenardier – comic contralto or mezzo; plays age 35-50s; the innkeeper’s unscrupulous wife.
Thenardier – male comic baritone; plays age 35-60s; a second-rate thief who runs a small inn.
Enjolras – male tenor or high baritone, plays age 20s-30s; the leader of the student revolutionaries and friend of Marius.
Bishop – male baritone, ages 35-70; houses Valjean after his release from prison and through his acts of kindness inspires Valjean to reform and escape the label of a criminal.
Gavrouche – boy soprano, age 9 - small 12, a streetwise urchin who dies helping the revolutionaries.
Young Cosette – girl age 8-12; sings; lives with the Thenardiers & forced to work; adopted by Valjean.
Eponine – girl ages 8-12; non-singer; pampered daughter of the Thenardiers.
HUGE MALE & FEMALE ENSEMBLE WITH NUMEROUS CAMEOS & FEATURED ROLES; ESPECIALLY NEEDED ARE YOUNG MEN (age 15 and older) TO PLAY REVOLUTIONARIES!
