grease

The popular musical Grease with memories of poodle skirts, duck-tail hairdos, and hot rods at the drive-in movies will be presented by the Charleston Light Opera Guild at the Clay Center July 28-30 and August 4-6, 2023.

It’s 1959 and Rydell High is filled with rebellious, thrill-loving students. In the midst of the action, Sandy Dumbrowski enters as the new girl in school. It turns out that she and Danny Zuko, the leader of the Burger Palace Boys, had a brief romance during the summer. The students deal with teen groups, pajama parties, drag races, romances, and more as they sing and dance to sounds similar to the hits in the 50s and 60s rock’n’roll era. The musical has a book and score by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey with additional songs by Barry Gibb, John Farrar, Louis St. Louis and Scott Simon. It premiered on Broadway in 1972, was made into a popular movie with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, and had major Broadway revivals in 1994 and 2007. It has been produced throughout the USA in tours, school and community productions plus UK and international productions, a reality series and a Grease Live! televised film remake with Aaron Tveit and Julianne Hough. CLOG previously presented the production in 1980, 1986, 2000, and 2008.
