The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a musical comedy that centers on a fictional spelling bee in the gymnasium of the Putnam Valley Middle School. An eclectic group of 6 quirky middle school students (usually played by adults) arrive at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, each eager to win for different reasons. The Bee is run by an equally quirky group of 3 adults. Four real audience members are invited on stage during each performance to compete alongside the 6 characters.

With a book by Rachel Sheinkin and engaging, tuneful score by William Finn, the 2005 Broadway production won the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for best book.
