Overview
|
America’s premier funny man, Neil Simon, and the Tony Award winning composer of A Chorus Line,
Marvin Hamlish, collaborated on this hit musical: a funny, romantic show about an established
composer and his relationship with an aspiring young female lyricist. Professionally, their relationship works beautifully-but this ultimately leads
to conflict on the home front. In a story based on the real-life
relationship of Hamlisch and Carol Bayer Sager, composer Vernon Gersch, in need of a new
lyricist, meets madcap Sonia Walsk, and initially the match clearly is not one
made in heaven. The two undergo a series of trials and overcome a number of
hurdles before finding true love by the final curtain. The play is full of
hilarious jokes and good music with a beguiling and witty script. They’re
Playing Our Song essentially is an intimate two-character show. Vernon and Sonia
are the sole actors on stage; a Greek chorus acting as
their inner voices is heard on and off stage. The original Broadway
production starred Robert Klein and Lucie Arnaz.
Musical numbers include Fallin, If He Really Knew Me, I Still
Believe in Love, Working It Out, When You’re In My Arms and
They’re Playing Our Song.
The show was last
performed by the Guild in 1984.
