A HEADLINE EVENT OF FESTIVALL CHARLESTON 2011, when a city becomes a work of art. Thoroughly Modern Millie is a musical with music by Jeanine Tesori, lyrics by Dick Scanlan, and a book by Richard Morris and Scanlan. Based on the 1967 film of the same name, “Thoroughly Modern Millie” tells the story of a small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love -- a thoroughly modern aim in 1922. It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz – a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. The show opened on Broadway in 2002 and subsequently won six 2002 Tony awards, including Best Musical and five Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding New Musical. Millie’s have included Julie Andrews in the movie and Sutton Foster, Tony Winner for the Broadway production. Thoroughly Modern Millie is filled with madcap merriment, frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences will love to hate. The tuneful score includes “Not for the Life of Me”, “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and “Jimmy”. Actress and former Charleston Light Opera Guild veteran, Jennifer Garner, will host a red carpet benefit for the Charleston Light Opera Guild on June 18, 2011 during FestivALL Charleston 2011, when the Light Opera Guild presents Thoroughly Modern Millie at the Charleston Civic Center Little Theatre.
