Les MisérablesThe Charleston Light Opera Guild, in collaboration with The Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences of WV, will be staging the international classic musical Les Misérables on November 1, 2, 8 and 9, 2013 at 7:30 p.m, with matinee performances starting at 2:00 p.m. on November 3 and 10, 2013 at the Maier Performance Hall at the Clay Center.

Les Misérables is a sung-through musical based on the novel of the same name by French poet and playwright Victor Hugo.  It has music by Claude-Michel Sconberg, original French lyrics by Alain Bloublil and Jean-Marc Natel, with an English-language libretto by Herbert Kretzmer. Set in early 19th century France, it is the story Jean Valjean, a burly French peasant of abnormal strength and potentially violent nature and his quest for redemption after serving 19 years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his starving sister’s child.

The London production of Les Misérables has been running continuously since October 1985. The original Broadway production won 8 Tony Awards and ran for 6,680 performances, making it the 4th longest running show in Broadway history. A revival was staged in 2006, and plans are underway to mount another revival on Broadway in the Spring of 2014. A film adaption was released in December 2012 and garnered three Academy Awards. The rights have only recently become available for community theatre and this will be the first Charleston, West Virginia area production.
