Overview

PIPPIN is a fast, fluid, dazzling show that premiered on Broadway in the early 1970’s and won five Tony awards.  The production was spearheaded by director/choreographer Bob Fosse with a score by Stephen Schwartz.  All past and present entertainments, such as circus, ballet, jazz, musical comedy, minstrel show, rock concert, magic show, vaudeville and spectacle are found in this razzmatazz musical.

The story concerns Pippin, the son of Charlemagne, and his quest for the meaning of life.  Prince Pippin longed to discover the secret of true happiness and fulfillment.  He sought it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power (after disposing of his father King Charlemagne the great).  In the end, he found it in the simple pleasures of home and family.

The age-old plot is told in almost one big production piece by a troupe of Commedia dell’Arte style players.  With a dazzling script and score this hip, tongue-in-cheek, anachronistic fairy tale captivated Broadway audiences and continues to appeal to the young at heart everywhere.

The Stephen Schwartz score includes Corner of the Sky, Magic to Do, and Morning Glow.
